HOPE — A Hope That Protects

HOPE — A Hope That Protects December 7, 2025 Dr. Melodie Bissell

Advent begins with hope—a quiet, steady confidence that God is at work even in the most broken places. For many, stories of harm and abuse can feel overwhelming, leaving communities discouraged or unsure of where to begin. But safeguarding is, at its core, an act of hope. It declares that things can be different and that every child, youth, and vulnerable adult deserves a safe place to belong. When we put thoughtful policies in place, strengthen accountability, and build teams who serve with integrity, we help usher in a future where safety is the norm, not the exception.

When I completed my doctorate in my mid-60's, I wondered what I would be able to do with it during the last few chapters of my life. The research focus of my thesis was listening to the lived experiences of victim-survivors of child sexual abuse. I  asked these brave individuals what was most instrumental in their healing journey. Over and over I heard stories of individuals who had walked alongside of them and had planted seeds of hope - hope that healing was possible.  Soon after graduating, I was invited to be a victim advocate, listening to intake stories of individuals who had been harmed. I attribute any successes I have had as a victim advocate to the research I undertook for my thesis.  I was able to pay it forward by gifting seeds of hope.

This hope is not passive; it compels us to act. Each time we commit to training, reduce risks, or listen attentively to concerns, we offer hope to those who have been silenced or overlooked. During this Advent season, may the hope we celebrate in Christ inspire us to keep building safer communities—places where healing is possible and where the vulnerable are protected with diligence and care.
