JOY — The Joy of Safe Community

Advent joy is more than cheerfulness—it is a deep assurance that God’s goodness meets us where we are. Joy flourishes in communities where people feel safe, included, and valued, and safeguarding is essential to nurturing that kind of environment. When we intentionally reduce risks, train our leaders well, and prioritize protection, we remove obstacles that overshadow joy. Every time a child laughs freely, a youth participates confidently, or a vulnerable adult experiences genuine belonging, we witness joy in action.

One of the camps we work with shared a story about a parent who was hesitant to send her daughter to overnight camp. Although the child had been begging to go, she grew fearful at the last minute as she prepared to board the camp bus. The parent expressed several concerns to the camp counsellor, who gently explained the steps the leadership and staff take to safeguard every camper. With some encouragement—though unsure who was more nervous, herself or her daughter—the mother allowed her child to go.

The week flew by, and the camper didn’t want to leave. She loved every minute and was overflowing with joy. At pick-up, her mom noticed how carefully staff ensured each child left safely with the correct guardian. The following week, she sent a heartfelt note to the camp director, thanking the team for prioritizing safety. She signed off, “I have never seen my daughter experience such joy! Thank you. Together, we are counting down the days to next year!”

Joy grows when the community commits to doing better. It shows up in volunteers who take safeguarding seriously, in leaders who champion accountability, and in camps, schools and churches that choose proactive care over complacency. This Advent, as we celebrate the joy Christ brings, may we also celebrate the joy that emerges from safe, healthy environments—communities where trust can deepen, relationships can thrive, and every person has the freedom to flourish.
