The second week of Advent draws our hearts toward peace—a peace that passes understanding and brings calm even in the midst of hardship. Yet in the context of abuse, peace is often the first thing stolen. Safeguarding restores peace by creating environments where people can trust that their wellbeing matters. Through clear policies, healthy boundaries, and consistent supervision, we actively work to reduce chaos and confusion, replacing them with predictability and protection. This kind of peace is tangible, felt in the stability and security of a well-prepared community.
We recently spoke to a young woman who started working at a Christian NGO. She shared that she was not a person of faith, but that it was a new experience to work in a place that had weekly chapels, started meetings in prayer, and promoted a safe, non-toxic work environment. An organization that prioritizes safety. She described the workplace as “a safe space where I feel peace.”
Peace also requires courage. It asks us to address harmful behaviours, intervene when something seems off, and ensure our work places, activities and programs hold safety as a sacred responsibility. When we choose integrity, transparency and accountability, we foster a peace that allows everyone to learn, thrive, and grow without fear. This Advent, may the peace of Christ compel us to pursue practices that reflect His care—creating places where people feel safe, known, and welcomed.
