  • During the past year, as we have taken on the project of updating our branding and our website, we have had the privilege of looking back at the last 30 years since we incorporated and have considered how we have evolved and the strong relationships that we have formed with clients and service providers who have become trusted partners.

Over the past 30 years, Plan to Protect® has evolved from a policy manual into a comprehensive safeguarding organization that helps churches, charities, and other organizations build safer environments through prevention, education, consulting, and ongoing support.

Here are nine ways to describe that evolution:

    1. From a Manual to a Comprehensive Safeguarding Framework

Plan to Protect® began as a practical resource to help churches reduce the risk of child abuse through sound policies and procedures. While policies remain foundational, the organization now emphasizes that policies and processes alone do not create safety—people, culture, training, accountability, and leadership do.

    2. From Child Protection to Safeguarding All Vulnerable People

Originally focused primarily on protecting children, Plan to Protect® has expanded its scope to include

    • Youth
    • Adults with disabilities
    • Older adults
    • Individuals receiving pastoral care
    • People experiencing trauma or crisis
    • Volunteers and staff serving vulnerable populations

This reflects a broader understanding of safeguarding as protecting the dignity and well-being of all vulnerable people.

    3. From Compliance to Healthy Organizational Culture

Early conversations often centred on reducing liability and meeting insurance expectations. Today, Plan to Protect® encourages organizations to develop a culture where:

    • Safety is a value and a priority within the organization.
    • Healthy relationships are intentionally cultivated.
    • Concerns can be raised without fear.
    • Leadership models accountability and transparency.
    • Prevention becomes part of everyday ministry rather than an annual task.

    4. From One-Time Training to Continuous Learning

Training has evolved from classroom sessions to a comprehensive learning model that includes:

    • Online learning
    • Instructor-led workshops
    • Webinars
    • Specialized seminars
    • Certified trainer programs
    • Ongoing refresher education
    • Leadership development
    • Group and one-on-one coaching

This recognizes that safeguarding requires continual reinforcement rather than one-time orientation.

    5. From Churches to Multiple Sectors

While churches remain central to our mission, Plan to Protect® now serves:

    • Camps
    • Schools
    • Charities
    • Sports and recreation organizations
    • Non-profit organizations
    • Community ministries
    • International ministries
    • Businesses
    • Many safeguarding principles apply across any organization serving vulnerable people.

    6. From Templates to Customized Solutions

Organizations now receive support tailored to their unique context through:

    • Policy development
    • Policy reviews
    • Risk assessments
    • Operational audits
    • Incident response consulting
    • Investigations
    • Leadership coaching
    • Strategic safeguarding planning

The focus has shifted from simply "having policies" to ensuring they are practical, implemented, and sustainable.

    7. From Risk Management to Trauma-Informed Practice

Plan to Protect® increasingly recognizes that safeguarding includes responding well after harm occurs. This means promoting:

    • Trauma-informed responses
    • Appropriate support for victim-survivors
    • Fair and respectful investigative processes
    • Healing alongside accountability
    • Restoration where appropriate without compromising safety

    8. From Paper Resources to Digital Support

What began with printed manuals has expanded to include:

    • Online training
    • Digital policy resources
    • Membership portals
    • Ongoing updates
    • Virtual coaching
    • Live webinars
    • Technology that makes safeguarding resources more accessible and easier to maintain

    9. From Rules to Values-Based Safeguarding

While practical risk management remains important, Plan to Protect® increasingly frames safeguarding as an expression of value. Safeguarding is presented not merely as compliance but as living out your values through relationships and calling:

    • Loving our neighbours
    • Protecting the vulnerable
    • Exercising faithful stewardship
    • Demonstrating servant leadership
    • Reflecting God's heart for justice, truth, and compassion

    The Continuing Mission

Although the methods and services have evolved, the mission has remained remarkably consistent:

To help organizations create environments where vulnerable people are protected, abuse is prevented, concerns are responded to appropriately, and trust can flourish.

Today, Plan to Protect® is more than a manual or a training program. It is a comprehensive safeguarding partner, equipping organizations with the policies, training, consulting, technology, and ongoing support needed to build and sustain a culture of safety over time.
